Pastrami Reuben on Rye

Warm deli sandwich with pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian or Thousand Island dressing on rye bread.

Preparation time: 10 min

Ingredients

  • Rye Bread – 4 slices
  • Butter – 30 g, softened
  • Russian or Thousand Island Dressing – 60 ml
  • Swiss Cheese – 4 slices
  • Pastrami – 200 g, thinly sliced
  • Sauerkraut – 120 g, well drained
  • Black Pepper – to taste
  • Pickles – optional, to serve

Method

STEP 1
Pat the sauerkraut dry with kitchen paper so the sandwich stays crisp. Warm the pastrami briefly if you prefer a hotter filling.

STEP 2
Spread the outside of each slice of rye bread with butter. Spread the dressing on the inside.

STEP 3
Build two sandwiches. Start with a slice of Swiss cheese, add the pastrami, then the sauerkraut and a little black pepper. Finish with another slice of cheese and close with the second slice of bread, dressing side down.

STEP 4
Grill the sandwiches in a skillet, grill pan or sandwich press over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the bread is golden brown and crisp and the cheese has melted.

STEP 5
Let the sandwiches rest briefly, cut in half and serve hot. Pickles are good on the side.
