Meatballs in tomato sauce

Tender meatballs in a smooth tomato sauce, a Belgian family-table favorite.

Serves: 4 people

Preparation time: 30 min

Ingredients

  • ground beef and pork mix – 1 1/2 lb
  • egg – 1
  • breadcrumbs – 1/2 cup
  • onion – 1 small, grated
  • parsley – 2 tbsp, chopped
  • nutmeg – 1 pinch
  • olive oil – 2 tbsp
  • onion – 1, chopped
  • garlic – 2 cloves
  • passata – 24 oz
  • tomato paste – 1 tbsp
  • sugar – 1 tsp
  • oregano – 1 tsp
  • salt – to taste
  • black pepper – to taste

Method

1. Mix the minced meat with the egg, breadcrumbs, grated onion, parsley, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Roll into medium meatballs.
2. Brown the meatballs in 1 tablespoon of oil and set them aside.
3. In the same pan, cook the chopped onion and garlic in the remaining oil. Stir in the tomato paste, then add the passata, sugar and oregano.
4. Return the meatballs to the sauce and simmer gently for 25 to 30 minutes until cooked through.
5. Taste and season the sauce with salt and pepper.
6. Serve with mashed potatoes, fries or bread.
