Golden toasted bread layered with ham and melting cheese: café-simple, bistro-friendly and impossible not to like.

Ingredients
- Sandwich bread – 8 slices
- Ham – 4 slices
- Gruyère or Emmental – 8 slices
- Butter – 30 g
- Béchamel, optional – 150 ml
- Salad leaves – 1 handful
- Black pepper – to taste
Method
Butter the bread, fill with ham and cheese and toast in a pan, oven or sandwich press until the outside is crisp and the inside melted. Add a spoonful of béchamel on top before baking if you want a fuller bistro version. Serve with a simple salad.
