Soft white bread, a neat layer of butter and a sparkling coat of hundreds and thousands: fairy bread is the fast, cheerful Australian party snack almost every child grows up with.

Serves: 4 people

Preparation time: 30 min

Ingredients

  • Soft white bread – 8 slices
  • Butter, softened – 4 tbsp
  • Hundreds and thousands – 1/2 cup

Method

1. Lay the bread on a board and spread each slice right to the edges with softened butter.
2. Scatter the hundreds and thousands over the butter, or press the buttered side gently into a shallow tray of sprinkles for a neater coating.
3. Press lightly so the sprinkles adhere well without crushing the bread.
4. Cut each slice into triangles and serve straight away, while the bread is still soft and fresh.
